FR vs VR vs FI vs VI

Fixed Ratio, Variable Ratio, Fixed Interval, and Variable Interval become much easier when you stop memorizing four separate definitions. First ask what controls reinforcement—responses or time? Then ask whether the requirement is predictable or variable?

BCBA exam shortcut: Ratio = responses. Interval = time. Fixed = predictable. Variable = changes around an average.

This is directly tested in the current BACB BCBA Test Content Outline (6th ed.). Domain B, task B.9 requires candidates to identify and distinguish among simple schedules of reinforcement. That means you should be able to recognize a schedule from a scenario, not merely recite its definition.

Do not let the example distract you. The fastest classification method is to identify the dimension that determines availability of reinforcement: response count or elapsed time.

Fixed Ratio (FR)

Rule: Reinforcement follows a predictable number of responses.

Example: FR 5 = every fifth response produces reinforcement.

Pattern: Typically high responding with a post-reinforcement pause, especially as ratio requirements become larger.

Recognition cue

Look for counting

“Every 10 responses,” “after five completed tasks,” and “after every third correct response” are ratio clues. If the required number stays constant, think fixed ratio.

Variable Ratio (VR)

Rule: Reinforcement follows an unpredictable number of responses that varies around an average.

Example: VR 5 might reinforce after 3, 7, 4, and 6 responses—averaging approximately five.

Pattern: Characteristically high and steady responding with little or no post-reinforcement pause.

If the learner cannot predict which response will produce reinforcement, but the schedule is based on response count, think variable ratio.

Fixed Interval (FI)

Rule: After a predictable interval passes, the first qualifying response can produce reinforcement.

Example: FI 5 min = after five minutes, the first target response is reinforced.

Pattern: Often produces a scalloped pattern—lower responding after reinforcement, accelerating as the interval approaches its end.

FI does not mean reinforcement is automatically delivered every five minutes. The interval makes reinforcement available; a qualifying response is still required.

Rule: The interval changes around an average; after each interval elapses, the next qualifying response can produce reinforcement.

Example: VI 5 min might use intervals of 3, 7, 4, and 6 minutes.

Pattern: Typically produces moderate, steady responding.

If the opportunity for reinforcement depends on elapsed time, but the interval changes unpredictably around a mean, think variable interval.

These patterns are especially useful when a question gives you a cumulative-record description instead of explicitly stating the schedule. Variable schedules tend to produce steadier responding because the next reinforcement opportunity is less predictable.

High-yield exam distinction: FI vs fixed-time (FT).

In an FI schedule, time must pass and then a response must occur for reinforcement. In a fixed-time schedule, the stimulus is delivered after the time interval regardless of responding. The BACB outline separately lists time-based reinforcement procedures under G.3.

FR vs FI: the “fixed” trap

Both are predictable, so the word fixed cannot tell you which one is correct. Ask what is being counted:

“Every 10 completed items” is FR. “The first correct response after 10 minutes” is FI.

VR vs VI: the “variable” trap

Both are unpredictable, so again you must identify the controlling dimension:

A scenario involving repeated attempts, trials, sales, or responses may suggest VR—but classify by the contingency, not by the surface story. A scenario involving checking or waiting may suggest VI—but verify that time is what varies.

A 4-step BCBA exam method

  1. Find the requirement. What must happen before reinforcement becomes available?
  2. Responses or time? Responses = ratio. Time = interval.
  3. Predictable or variable? Constant requirement = fixed. Changing requirement around an average = variable.
  4. Check the response pattern. Use pause, scallop, and steady-rate clues to confirm your answer.

Common BCBA exam traps

1. “Every few minutes” does not automatically mean interval

Read carefully. A schedule can be described over time while still being response-based. Identify the actual reinforcement requirement.

2. “Average of five” often signals variable—not fixed

VR 5 or VI 5 means requirements vary around an average of five responses or five units of time. It does not mean every fifth response or exactly every five minutes.

3. FI reinforcement is response-dependent

After the interval ends, reinforcement becomes available for the qualifying response. If delivery occurs solely because time passed, you are dealing with a time-based schedule rather than an interval schedule.

4. Post-reinforcement pause points strongly toward fixed schedules

FR commonly shows a break-and-run pattern; FI commonly shows a scallop. VR and VI are more characteristically steady.

5. Do not classify by the everyday example alone

Real-life examples can contain multiple contingencies. On the exam, use the schedule details stated in the scenario rather than relying on memorized associations such as “gambling = VR.”
