The ABC model: the three-term foundation
ABC stands for antecedent, behavior, consequence. It is a compact way to organize behavioral observations: what occurred before the response, what the person did, and what occurred afterward.
ABC data are useful for describing patterns, but temporal order alone does not prove a functional relation. An event that occurs before behavior is not automatically a discriminative stimulus, and an event that occurs afterward is not automatically a reinforcer or punisher.
The terms antecedent and consequence can be descriptive. Terms such as SD, reinforcer, and punisher are functional labels that depend on learning history and demonstrated behavioral effects.
What makes it a four-term contingency?
A common ABA teaching arrangement expands the three-term operant contingency by explicitly including a motivating operation (MO). The sequence is often represented as:
The four terms answer different questions. The MO concerns the current effectiveness of a consequence and the current frequency of behavior that has produced that consequence. The SD concerns a history in which reinforcement for a particular response has been more available in its presence than in its absence.
Term 1: Motivating operation (MO)
A motivating operation has two defining kinds of effects. First, it changes the current effectiveness of a stimulus, object, or event as a reinforcer or punisher—a value-altering effect. Second, it changes the current frequency of behavior that has historically produced that consequence—a behavior-altering effect.

Term 2: Discriminative stimulus (SD)
An SD is not simply “something that comes before behavior.” It is an antecedent stimulus in whose presence a particular response has historically contacted reinforcement more often than under relevant alternative conditions. Through that history, the SD can momentarily increase the probability of the response.
A useful exam shorthand is: MO changes value; SD signals availability. That shorthand is valuable only if you remember the underlying functional histories.
MO vs SD: the exam-critical distinction

If the scenario says an event makes a consequence more or less effective, think MO. If it describes a learned signal for when a response is likely to contact reinforcement, think SD. Both can alter current responding, but they do so through different behavioral relations.
Term 3: Behavior / response
The behavior is the response being analyzed. For BCBA-style questions, define it in observable, measurable terms. “Asks for water” is behavior; “is thirsty” is not the response in the contingency.
Also remember that topography does not determine function. Two responses that look the same may participate in different contingencies, and different-looking responses may serve the same function.
Term 4: Consequence
A consequence is an environmental change that follows behavior. But the word consequence by itself does not tell you whether the event is a reinforcer or punisher. Those functional labels require evidence about future responding.
- Reinforcement: the relevant response increases in the future.
- Punishment: the relevant response decreases in the future.
- No demonstrated effect: simply following behavior is not enough to classify the consequence as either.
Worked example: asking for water
MO → SD → response → consequence
MO: Period without water increases water's current reinforcing value.
SD: A relevant person or context signals that asking can produce water.
Response: “Water, please.”
Consequence: Water is delivered.
Look beyond the sequence
If asking for water becomes more likely under comparable conditions, water delivery has functioned as reinforcement for asking.
The bottle, person, or other antecedent should not automatically be labeled an SD without the relevant discrimination history.
ABC vs four-term contingency: do not treat them as competing models
The ABC model is often used as a practical observation and assessment framework. The four-term contingency is a more explicit conceptual analysis that separates motivational variables from discriminative control. In practice, an “antecedent” field on an ABC record may contain information about several antecedent variables—including possible MOs, SDs, contextual events, or other stimuli.
For exam purposes, the important skill is not memorizing that “the fourth term goes first.” It is being able to identify the functional role of each variable in a scenario.
A 5-step BCBA exam method
- Identify the target response. What observable behavior is being analyzed?
- Identify what follows it. What consequence is produced or contacted?
- Look for value change. Does an antecedent condition alter how effective that consequence is? Consider an MO.
- Look for differential availability. Does an antecedent stimulus signal that the response is likely to contact reinforcement based on learning history? Consider an SD.
- Verify the functional label. Do not infer function from timing, appearance, or everyday wording alone.
Common BCBA exam traps
1. “Before behavior” does not automatically mean SD
Antecedent is a temporal category. SD is a functional relation based on differential reinforcement history.
2. “After behavior” does not automatically mean reinforcer
A consequence must increase future responding to be classified as a reinforcer.
3. MO and SD can both increase current responding
The fact that a variable makes behavior more likely does not distinguish them. Ask why: value-altering relation or stimulus-control relation?
4. The MO is not simply “what the person wants”
Use technical language. An MO is an environmental variable with value-altering and behavior-altering effects—not a synonym for desire or preference.
5. Sequence is not causation
ABC observations can suggest hypotheses and patterns. Demonstrating functional relations requires appropriate behavior-analytic assessment or experimental analysis.
