The Four Functions of Behavior

Attention, escape, tangible access, and automatic reinforcement are a useful study framework—but the exam skill is deeper: identify the maintaining contingency, separate function from topography, and use assessment data rather than guessing from how behavior looks.

The current BCBA Test Content Outline (6th ed.) directly supports the concepts behind this topic. Domain B requires candidates to distinguish automatic and socially mediated contingencies (B.6), while Domain F includes designing and evaluating descriptive assessments and functional analyses (F.5–F.6). Behavior Assessment accounts for 13% of scored exam content in the current outline.

What does “function of behavior” mean?

In behavior analysis, function refers to the environmental relation that maintains responding. A practical study question is: What consequence is this behavior producing, escaping, avoiding, or generating that makes it more likely to occur again?

This is different from topography, which describes the form of behavior—what it looks or sounds like. Yelling, crying, hitting, leaving an area, or hand flapping are topographies. Their function must be determined from the contingency and assessment data.

Important precision:

The “four functions” framework is a useful teaching shorthand, but real behavioral contingencies can be more nuanced. Do not force every case into a label based on surface features alone; behavior analysts formulate and test functional hypotheses using assessment data.

Function 1: Attention

Attention

Social interaction follows behavior

Behavior may be maintained when it reliably produces social attention from another person: comments, reprimands, eye contact, conversation, comforting, assistance, or other interaction.

Do not equate attention with praise

Attention does not have to look positive. A reprimand or repeated correction may function as reinforcement if it increases the behavior that produces it.

Example

A student calls out during independent work. Each time, the teacher immediately approaches and talks with the student. If calling out occurs more often because it produces that interaction, the behavior is maintained by attention.

Function 2: Escape

Escape

Behavior ends or postpones an event

Behavior may be maintained when it results in the removal, postponement, reduction, or avoidance of a task, demand, interaction, transition, or other aversive condition.

Look at what disappears

If a demand consistently ends after the response and the response becomes more likely in similar contexts, escape via negative reinforcement is a strong functional hypothesis.

Example

A worksheet is presented. The learner engages in problem behavior, and the worksheet is removed. If problem behavior becomes more likely when similar work is presented because it has produced task removal, escape is the maintaining function.

Function 3: Tangible access

Behavior produces access

Behavior may be maintained when it produces access to a preferred item, food, activity, material, or privilege.

Track the delivered outcome

If the consequence is access to the item or activity and that access increases future responding, tangible reinforcement is supported.

Example

A child cries when a tablet is unavailable. The tablet is then given to the child. If crying increases in contexts where tablet access is restricted because crying has produced the tablet, access to the tangible item may be the maintaining consequence.

Function 4: Automatic reinforcement

Automatic reinforcement

No social mediator required

The behavior itself directly produces a reinforcing consequence. Another person does not need to deliver attention, remove a demand, or provide an item.

Exam cue

Do not assume “sensory” from appearance

Repetitive or stereotyped-looking behavior is not automatically maintained by automatic reinforcement. Function still requires assessment.

Example

A repetitive response continues at substantial levels even when socially mediated consequences are unavailable, and assessment supports a directly produced sensory consequence. That pattern may support an automatic-reinforcement hypothesis.

Function vs topography

This is one of the most important distinctions to master. The same topography can have different functions, and different topographies can serve the same function.

Not necessarily. Demands may be an antecedent, but the maintaining consequence must still be established. The behavior could produce attention, access to an item, escape, or another consequence. Look at what reliably follows the behavior and test the functional hypothesis.

How to identify the function

  1. Define the behavior. Use observable and measurable terms rather than labels such as “defiant,” “attention-seeking,” or “sensory.”
  2. Examine antecedent patterns. What events, demands, people, activities, or contexts reliably precede the behavior?
  3. Examine consequences. What changes immediately after the behavior? What is delivered, removed, postponed, or produced?
  4. Look for repeated relations. Use descriptive data to identify patterns across occasions rather than relying on a single episode.
  5. Test when appropriate. A functional analysis systematically manipulates relevant variables to evaluate functional relations when clinically appropriate.

ABC data: useful, but not proof by themselves

ABC recording can reveal recurring antecedent-behavior-consequence patterns and support hypotheses. However, descriptive correlation is not the same as experimental demonstration. The current BCBA outline distinguishes descriptive assessment from functional analysis, and candidates should understand that these methods provide different levels of evidence.

Common BCBA exam traps

1. Labeling by appearance

Rocking, hand flapping, crying, aggression, or yelling do not reveal function by themselves.

2. Assuming all attention is positive

Scolding, correcting, arguing, or prolonged eye contact can function as attention if they reinforce the behavior.

3. Assuming demands automatically mean escape

A demand can be part of the antecedent context without escape being the maintaining consequence.

4. Assuming being alone proves automatic reinforcement

Persistence without social consequences may contribute to an automatic-reinforcement hypothesis, but function requires adequate assessment.

5. Forgetting multiple control

The same response may contact different reinforcers across people, contexts, or times. A behavior does not have to be maintained by only one function under all conditions.

Practice: identify the likely function

1. During class, a student shouts. The teacher immediately walks over and talks to the student. Shouting increases over several days. What function is most strongly suggested?
