The BACB replaced the Initial Competency Assessment on January 1, 2026. Here is what is different on the new form, and the transition rules that decide whether your old training still counts.
On January 1, 2026 the BACB replaced the RBT Initial Competency Assessment with a new version, at the same time as it replaced the 40-hour training requirements and the exam content outline. If you trained before that date and are only now applying, or you are a supervisor still working from last year’s packet, the differences matter enough to catch people out.
What changed on the assessment itself
The BACB describes the update as “slight changes to content and assessment options” plus a new requirement for assistant assessors. In practice, three things are worth knowing.
1. The form is now 19 tasks
The current form runs from task 1 to task 19, grouped as Measurement (1–3), Assessment (4–5), Skill Acquisition and Behavior Reduction (6–14), and Professionalism and Requirements (15–19). Guides and agency handouts that describe a 20-task assessment are describing the previous version. If your assessor hands you a form with 20 tasks on it, it is the wrong form.
2. Fewer tasks can be handled by interview
On the 2026 form, only tasks 13 and 15 offer Interview alongside the hands-on options, and tasks 16–19 are interview-only by design. Everything else — all three measurement tasks, both assessment tasks, and the teaching and behaviour-reduction procedures in tasks 6–12 and 14 — must be performed, either with a client or in role-play.
3. Assistant assessors must be certified
A responsible assessor has always been able to delegate portions of the assessment. Under the 2026 rules, anyone acting as an assistant assessor must hold an active RBT certification or higher and must have demonstrated proficiency in the material through direct observation. An uncertified senior technician can no longer run parts of a competency assessment.

The transition traps
The BACB’s transition guidance answers several situations that come up constantly. These are the ones worth memorising.
My application was approved before January 1, 2026 but I haven’t passed the exam yet
You are fine. An approval lasts 12 months, and you may take the RBT examination up to eight times within the 12 months following your initial examination approval. Because your application was approved before the new requirements took effect, you do not have to meet them.
My application approval expired
If it expired before January 1, 2026, you need the new training and the most up-to-date version of the Initial Competency Assessment before reapplying. One exception: if the training certificate you already hold carries the new 2026 approval statement, you do not need to retrain — but you still need to redo the competency assessment.
My certification lapsed
If your certification lapses on or after January 1, 2026 and you want to come back, you complete the new 40-hour training and then the most up-to-date Initial Competency Assessment before reapplying.
Is there a bridge course?
No. The BACB is explicit: you will need to complete the full training again. There is no shortened top-up for people who trained under the previous requirements.
What did not change
- Eligibility. Still 18 or older, high-school education or equivalent, criminal background check and abuse registry check reviewed by an attestor.
- The 90-day window. The assessment still cannot be completed more than 90 days before you submit your application.
- Ongoing supervision. Still a minimum of 5% of the hours you spend delivering behavior-analytic services in a calendar month, including two face-to-face contacts, at least one of which is an individual meeting.
- The three-client rule. Three tasks from the Skill Acquisition and Behavior Reduction section still have to be demonstrated with a real client.
What about recertification?
This is where the most inaccurate information is circulating. A lot of coverage claims the renewal competency assessment was abolished in 2026.
