One is a hands-on skills check run by your own supervisor. The other is a timed, closed-book exam at a testing centre. Passing the first tells you surprisingly little about the second.
Two different hurdles sit between the end of your 40-hour training and an active RBT certification, and they get confused constantly — partly because people call both of them “the RBT test.” They are not alike. One is a hands-on skills check run by your supervisor before you apply. The other is a timed, closed-book, 85-question examination you sit at a testing centre after your application is approved.

Why passing one tells you almost nothing about the other
This is the part worth internalising. The competency assessment is scaffolded in your favour: your own supervisor runs it, it happens in a familiar setting with familiar clients, you can be coached between attempts, and there is no time pressure. It is designed to get you to competence, not to sort you.
The examination is the opposite. It is closed-book, timed at roughly 63 seconds per question, sat alone, and full of scenario items where three of the four options are plausible. It tests whether you can tell a DRO from a DRA under pressure and whether you know which behaviour is inside an RBT’s scope — knowledge that never comes up while you are being watched running a token board.
What the exam covers that the assessment does not
Since January 1, 2026 the examination follows the RBT Test Content Outline, 3rd edition. Its six domains and their weightings are heavier on knowledge areas the competency form barely touches:

Ethics is the clearest gap. It is 15% of the examination, but on the competency form it is four interview questions where your assessor can accept a reasonable answer from your own workplace. The exam asks you to apply the RBT Ethics Code to scenarios with no supervisor in the room to nudge you.
The order of operations
- Meet the eligibility requirements: 18 or older, high-school education or equivalent, background and abuse registry checks.
- Complete the 40-hour training that meets the 2026 requirements.
- Complete the Initial Competency Assessment — all 19 tasks, signed by your responsible assessor.
- Submit your certification application within 90 days of completing the assessment.
- Once approved, schedule and sit the examination. You have 12 months and up to eight attempts.
How to prepare for each
They deserve different preparation.
