What Intervention and Practice covers on the ASWB Masters exam
This content area is 32% of the ASWB Masters exam. ASWB's 2026 content outline includes:
Strengths-based and empowerment approaches, the helping relationship, team collaboration, end-of-life care, parenting, permanency planning, and community organizing
Crisis intervention, trauma-informed care, engaging voluntary and involuntary clients, advocacy, case management, and discharge and aftercare
Group work stages and techniques, family therapy models, conflict resolution, psychoeducation, and social change and planning
Evaluating practice and programs, single-system designs, needs assessment, formative and summative evaluation, and reliability and validity
The supervisee's role, supervision and consultation models, risk-reducing policies, and transference and countertransference in supervision
How to study Intervention and Practice
Match each intervention to its core technique, such as partializing in problem solving, rolling with resistance in motivational interviewing, or opposite action in DBT.
Know what the worker does in each stage of a group, especially the beginning stage, when the task is to clarify purpose and set norms.
For research questions, identify the design and the threat to validity described rather than memorizing statistics.

Intervention and Practice
Sample question 1
Which assumption is central to the strengths perspective in social work practice?
Clients change most when the worker first pinpoints what is wrong with them
Every person, family, and community has resources that can support change
Professionals are better placed than clients to decide on the goals of service
Past trauma sets a firm limit on how much a client can be expected to grow
Show correct answer and explanation
Correct answer: B. Every person, family, and community has resources that can support change
B is correct because the strengths perspective, as described by Saleebey, holds that all clients and communities have capacities and resources, and that these are the foundation for change. A is incorrect because beginning with deficits describes a problem-focused or medical model, which the strengths perspective was developed to counter. C is incorrect because the strengths perspective stresses collaboration and treats clients as experts on their own lives. D is incorrect because the strengths perspective holds that the upper limits of a person's capacity to grow are unknown and that struggle can also be a source of strength.

Sample question 2
A client tells the social worker that the landlord has ignored a broken heater for two weeks and asks the social worker to call the landlord. The client is articulate and has a phone but says they never know what to say to people in authority. Which response BEST reflects an empowerment approach?
Explore earlier experiences that made authority figures feel threatening
Help the client plan and rehearse what to say on the call
Call the landlord on the client's behalf to get the heater fixed
Give the client the number of a local tenant rights hotline
Show correct answer and explanation
Correct answer: B. Help the client plan and rehearse what to say on the call
B is correct because empowerment practice builds the client's own skills and sense of control, so preparing the client to make the call increases their capacity to handle similar problems later. A is incorrect because the immediate goal is a working heater, and exploring the past does not help the client act now. C is incorrect because doing the task for a capable client solves this problem but reinforces the belief that they cannot deal with authority figures. D is incorrect because a referral passes the problem to another service without building the skills the client said they lack.

Sample question 3
Two social workers assess the same family, which was referred after a child's school attendance dropped. One records only the problems that led to the referral. The other also records the grandmother's daily help, the parent's steady job, and the family's church ties. What is the MOST important advantage of the second approach?
It removes the need to talk with the school about the attendance
It shortens the assessment by setting the attendance problem aside
It identifies resources the family can draw on in the service plan
It allows the social worker to close the case sooner than planned
Show correct answer and explanation
Correct answer: C. It identifies resources the family can draw on in the service plan
C is correct because a strengths-based assessment records capacities and supports alongside problems, giving the worker and family concrete resources on which to build the plan. A is incorrect because recording strengths does not replace gathering information from collateral sources involved in the problem. B is incorrect because a strengths-based assessment does not ignore the presenting problem; it adds strengths to the picture. D is incorrect because the purpose of noting strengths is to build a better plan, not to shorten services.

Sample question 4
A client in early recovery from alcohol use disorder drank again after four months of sobriety and tells the social worker, "I'm a failure. I always ruin everything." The client returned to treatment on their own and has no safety concerns. Which response BEST reflects a strengths-based approach?
Explore what helped the client stay sober for four months
Reassure the client that relapse is a normal part of recovery
Recommend a more intensive level of treatment right away
Review the triggers that led to the relapse in close detail
Show correct answer and explanation
Correct answer: A. Explore what helped the client stay sober for four months
A is correct because drawing out the coping skills and supports behind four months of sobriety counters the client's all-or-nothing view and gives a strengths-based foundation for renewed recovery. B is incorrect because reassurance can feel dismissive and does not help the client see the capacities they have already shown. C is incorrect because one relapse followed by a voluntary return to treatment does not by itself show a need for a higher level of care. D is incorrect because relapse analysis is useful later, but starting with what went wrong reinforces the client's sense of failure while their strengths go unrecognized.

Sample question 5
Residents of a public housing complex ask a social worker at the tenant association to meet with the housing authority about mold in their units. Several residents have documented the problem with photos and want to be involved. What is the social worker's BEST role?
Present the residents' photos to the housing authority as their advocate
Help the residents prepare to present the problem to the authority themselves
Refer the residents to a legal aid office so they can file a complaint
Ask the housing authority to inspect the units before residents get involved
Show correct answer and explanation
Correct answer: B. Help the residents prepare to present the problem to the authority themselves
B is correct because empowerment practice supports people in acting on their own behalf, and residents who present their own evidence build collective power and skills for future issues. A is incorrect because speaking for residents who want to be involved takes the leading role away from them and limits their growth in power. C is incorrect because legal action may become necessary, but it is a later step when residents have not yet raised the problem directly. D is incorrect because it sidelines residents who have already gathered evidence and want to act.

Sample question 6
In Carl Rogers's person-centered approach, unconditional positive regard means that the social worker:
Reflects back the client's feelings with accurate understanding
Shares personal feelings openly so the relationship stays genuine
Agrees with the decisions the client makes about their own life
Accepts the client's worth without conditions on their behavior
Show correct answer and explanation
Correct answer: D. Accepts the client's worth without conditions on their behavior
D is correct because unconditional positive regard is warm acceptance of the client as a person that does not depend on the client's behavior or choices. A is incorrect because this describes accurate empathy, a separate core condition. B is incorrect because this describes congruence, or genuineness, another of Rogers's core conditions. C is incorrect because acceptance of the person does not mean approving of every choice or behavior.

Sample question 7
Midway through a session, a client notices the social worker glance at the clock and asks, "Am I boring you?" The social worker replies, "You caught me looking at the clock, and I'm sorry. I lost focus for a moment, and I want to give you my full attention." Which quality of the helping relationship does this response BEST show?
Confrontation
Empathy
Genuineness
Unconditional positive regard
Show correct answer and explanation
Correct answer: C. Genuineness
C is correct because genuineness, or congruence, means being honest and transparent with the client, here by owning the lapse instead of denying it. A is incorrect because confrontation points out discrepancies in the client's words or behavior, not the worker's. B is incorrect because empathy is accurate understanding of the client's feelings, while this response mainly shows the worker's honesty about their own behavior. D is incorrect because unconditional positive regard is nonjudgmental acceptance of the client's worth, which is not the focus of this exchange.
Intervention and Practice
Sample question 8
A client at a community mental health center discloses, with visible shame, that years ago they left their young children alone overnight while using drugs. The children are now adults, and the client has been sober for ten years. What is the social worker's BEST initial response?
Point out that ten years of sobriety shows the client has changed
Thank the client for sharing something that is clearly painful to say
Ask whether child protective services was involved with the family then
Remind the client that the past cannot be changed and to focus on now
Show correct answer and explanation
Correct answer: B. Thank the client for sharing something that is clearly painful to say
B is correct because acknowledging the courage of the disclosure conveys acceptance and keeps the client willing to explore the shame they feel. A is incorrect because quick reassurance can seem to dismiss the shame before the client has been heard. C is incorrect because shifting to fact-finding about a long-past event may feel judging, and the children are now adults. D is incorrect because it closes off the feelings the client is bringing forward.
Intervention and Practice
Sample question 9
In a first meeting at a youth shelter, a 17-year-old who has had several caseworkers says, "Don't bother getting to know me. You'll leave like the rest of them." What is the social worker's BEST response?
Explain that staff turnover happens because of agency funding problems
Move on to the intake questions and let trust build over time
Acknowledge the losses and be honest about the length of services
Promise the youth that this time the worker will not leave
Show correct answer and explanation
Correct answer: C. Acknowledge the losses and be honest about the length of services
C is correct because naming the youth's experience and being honest about the relationship's limits builds trust through genuineness, the basis of rapport with someone who expects to be let down. A is incorrect because explaining the agency's reasons focuses on the system and does not respond to the youth's feelings. B is incorrect because ignoring the youth's statement misses the chance to engage with the concern they raised. D is incorrect because a promise the social worker may not be able to keep risks repeating the betrayal the youth fears.

Sample question 10
In the planned change, or problem-solving, process, which phase directly follows assessment?
Evaluation of the client's progress
Implementation of the agreed interventions
Planning and contracting with the client
Engagement and building rapport
Show correct answer and explanation
Correct answer: C. Planning and contracting with the client
C is correct because after the problem and strengths are assessed, the worker and client set goals and agree on a plan, often in a written or verbal contract. A is incorrect because evaluation measures progress toward the goals that are set during planning. B is incorrect because interventions are carried out only after goals and a plan have been set. D is incorrect because engagement comes first, before assessment begins.
